When Is Winter Break in Georgia? 2026-27 Dates for Every Metro Atlanta District

If you have searched for winter break dates in Georgia and come away confused, there is a good reason. In metro Atlanta, "winter break" refers to two completely different weeks, and which one people mean depends on which district they are in.

Here are both, with dates confirmed against the official 2026-27 calendars.

Quick answer

December break runs Monday 21 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027 in almost every metro Atlanta district. Students finish on Friday 18 December and return on Tuesday 5 January 2027.

February break falls the week of Presidents Day, 15 to 19 February 2027, in most districts. Gwinnett is the exception and takes 12 to 16 February instead.

Why "winter break" means two different things here

This is the part that catches people out, and it is not your imagination.

Cobb County officially labels the December closure "Winter Holidays" and the February week "Winter Break". Fulton County calls December "December Break" and February "Winter Break". Atlanta Public Schools uses the same split.

So when a parent in Cobb says winter break, they usually mean February. When a parent moving in from out of state says winter break, they almost always mean Christmas. Both are right, according to the districts themselves.

If you are searching for dates, it is worth working out which one you actually need before you book anything.

The good news is that December is unusually consistent across metro Atlanta. Unlike fall break, which scatters across three different weeks depending on your district, almost every district lines up.

A few notes worth knowing.

Friday 18 December is an early release day in Cobb, and high schools in Cobb and Gwinnett have early dismissal for exams from 16 to 18 December. If you have a middle or high schooler, check your own school's dismissal time rather than assuming a normal Friday.

Monday 4 January is not a school day. Every district above uses it as a teacher workday or planning day. Students are off, and it is the day most likely to be missed when parents are counting up their coverage.

Gwinnett overlaps with the other districts by only two days. If your family is split across districts, the calendars do not match this year.

Gwinnett families, read that row twice. Gwinnett's break starts on Friday 12 February and ends on Tuesday 16 February, with students back in class on Wednesday 17 February. It overlaps with everyone else's break by only two days.

If you have children in Gwinnett and a partner, friend or relative coordinating around a Cobb or Fulton calendar, those calendars do not match this year. It is worth checking before you make plans on the assumption that everyone is off the same week.

One more Fulton quirk. Fulton's official calendar lists Winter Break as 15 to 17 February and then marks 18 and 19 February as professional development days. Students are off the full week either way, but if you look at the calendar quickly you might think Thursday and Friday are school days. They are not.

The days that actually catch working parents out

Most families plan around the big blocks and get caught by the small ones. There are two in this stretch.

Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 December. Schools close on the Friday, but most offices run right up to Christmas Eve. That leaves three working days where school is shut and work is not. Almost nobody plans for these until the week arrives.

Monday 4 January. Schools are closed for a teacher workday. Offices are firmly back open after the New Year holiday. It is a single orphan day, it is easy to miss when you are scanning a calendar, and it lands right when annual leave balances have reset to zero.

Between them, that is four working days of coverage sitting either side of the holiday itself.

Planning around both breaks

Work out which break you actually need to cover. For many families the December closure overlaps enough with workplace shutdown that only two or three days need solving. February is usually the harder one, because it is a full week in the middle of term with no public holiday attached beyond Presidents Day.

Check both parents' districts if they differ. With Gwinnett out of step this year, families split across districts have a genuine mismatch to plan around.

Look at February now, not in January. The February week is the one families consistently forget about. It has no holiday attached, no travel tradition, and no natural prompt. It arrives in the middle of a working term and it is a full five days. Programs that run that week fill early precisely because so few people are looking at it in advance.

Winter break catches Atlanta families out in two different ways. The December closure looks longer than it is once you account for the three working days before Christmas and the orphan Monday on 4 January. The February week is the one nobody sees coming at all, because it sits in the middle of term with no holiday attached.

Work out which of the two you actually need to cover, check your own district rather than assuming, and sort February now while there is still time to. Most families find it is fewer days than they feared.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Not necessarily, and this is the most common source of confusion. Several metro Atlanta districts, including Cobb, Fulton and Atlanta Public Schools, officially use "winter break" for the February week around Presidents Day, and use "winter holidays" or "December break" for the Christmas closure. If someone tells you their child is off for winter break in February, they are using their district's own terminology.

  • The larger metro districts do, though the dates are not identical. Cobb, Fulton, DeKalb, Cherokee and Atlanta Public Schools are closed 15 to 19 February 2027. Gwinnett takes 12 to 16 February 2027 instead. Smaller districts and independent schools set their own dates and should be checked individually.

  • Tuesday 5 January 2027 across the major metro Atlanta districts. Monday 4 January is a teacher workday or planning day in every one of them, so students are off that day even though it is not part of the holiday itself.

  • The February week functions as a mid-semester reset between the January return and spring break in April, and it builds flexibility into the calendar for inclement weather days. Districts that start in early August and finish in May need break weeks distributed through the year to hit the required instructional days, and February is the natural gap in the second semester.

  • It is unlikely under current district practice. Metro Atlanta districts now generally absorb inclement weather closures using digital learning days built into the calendar in advance, rather than by cutting into scheduled breaks. Gwinnett states this explicitly, and Cobb schedules four digital learning days across the year for the same purpose. Breaks are far more likely to hold than they were a decade ago, though districts do retain the option to extend the school day or year if closures are unusually heavy.

  • Not reliably. Independent and faith-based schools across metro Atlanta set their own calendars, and while most cluster their December closure around the same fortnight as the public districts, start and return dates often differ by a day or two. February breaks vary far more widely, and some independent schools do not take one at all. If your children are split between public and independent schools, check both calendars rather than assuming they align.

  • Yes. Monday 18 January 2027 is a systemwide holiday across Cobb, Fulton, Gwinnett, DeKalb, Cherokee and Atlanta Public Schools. It sits roughly two weeks after students return from the December break and about four weeks before the February break, and it is another full weekday when schools are closed and most workplaces are open.
