About Josh Powell Camp

A Family-Owned Atlanta Day Camp Since 1972

Josh Powell Camp is a family-owned outdoor day camp in Acworth, Georgia, founded by Josh Powell in 1972.

For more than 50 years, Josh Powell Camp has stayed true to one mission: getting kids ages 5 to 10 outside, away from screens, and into real outdoor adventure on a 30-acre campus just north of Atlanta.

The camp runs 11 summer sessions plus fall, winter, and spring break camps throughout the year.

Who founded Josh Powell Camp?

Josh Powell founded the camp in 1972 on a simple belief: kids grow best when they are free to explore, play, and connect with nature and each other.

That belief has anchored Josh Powell Camp ever since, through more than five decades of Atlanta summers. The camp has never been a corporate franchise.

It has always been a family-run community that cares about every child who walks through the gates.

Who owns and runs Josh Powell Camp today?

Josh Powell Camp has passed through three sets of trusted hands, each one part of the camp family before they ever led it.

  • Josh Powell founded and ran the camp starting in 1972.

  • Karen Powell continued operating the camp after Josh Powell passed away, leading it until 2014.

  • In 2014, Karen Powell passed the torch to Suzanne Quinlan and Jason Kay, who own and operate Josh Powell Camp today.

Suzanne Quinlan is a longtime Powell family friend, a 10-time Josh Powell counselor, and a first-grade teacher with three decades in elementary education. She understands exactly how children ages 5 to 10 learn, grow, and thrive.

Jason Kay is Suzanne's nephew, a three-time Josh Powell camper, and an experienced counselor who has worked at camps across the Atlanta area. He brings the perspective of someone who grew up at the camp, plus fresh ideas for keeping programs exciting while honoring JPC's outdoor traditions.

Suzanne and Jason did not just learn the camp's operations.

They lived the Josh Powell experience themselves, first as campers, then as counselors, and now as stewards of a tradition that has shaped thousands of Atlanta childhoods.

What does Josh Powell Camp teach kids?

The lessons campers learn at Josh Powell Camp are built to last a lifetime: confidence, teamwork, resilience, problem-solving, and genuine friendship.

These come from real outdoor experiences, not screens, and they carry over into school, home, and beyond. Camp runs year-round, so kids can keep building those skills during summer and across fall, winter, and spring break.

A note from Suzanne and Jason

We are bringing our combined experience to JPC to keep serving the children of our community during such a formative time in their lives.

Our intent is simple: to help shape your children as best we can in the time we have with them, summer and every school break in between.

There are few experiences like the unplugged, get-dirty, outdoor adventure of Josh Powell Camp, and we are proud to carry forward Josh Powell's vision for the next generation of Atlanta families.
