District-by-District Breakdown

Here's the detail on each district, straight from official sources.

Fulton County Schools

Fulton County Schools' fall break is scheduled for September 21 to 23, 2026, followed by two Teacher Workdays on September 24-25. In practice, that means kids are out of school for the full week of September 21 through 25. ActivityHeroThe Fulton County school year runs from August 3, 2026 through May 27, 2027.

Cobb County Schools

Cobb County has aligned closely with Fulton this year. According to the official district calendar, fall break falls September 21–25, 2026. Georgiaschools The Cobb school year begins August 3, 2026 and ends May 19, 2027.

Cherokee County Schools

Cherokee County, where Josh Powell Camp is based, follows the same late-September window as Fulton and Cobb. The official Cherokee County School District calendar lists September 21 to 25 as school holidays, giving families a full week off. Finalsite Cherokee County classes start August 3, 2026 for the 2026-27 year.

Gwinnett County Public Schools

Gwinnett County takes a later fall break than the north metro districts. The GCPS calendar shows Fall Break running Oct. 12-16, 2026. This is the largest school district in Georgia by enrollment, so this date affects hundreds of thousands of families across the eastern metro. Georgiaschools The Gwinnett school year runs from August 5, 2026 through May 26, 2027.

DeKalb County Schools

DeKalb County has synced its fall break with Gwinnett and APS. Fall Break is scheduled for October 12 through October 16, 2026. Finalsite DeKalb students begin the year on August 5, 2026, with the last day of school on May 21, 2027.

When Is Fall Break in Georgia Schools

Why the Dates Are Split This Year

You'll notice a clear pattern: districts in the north and northwest metro (Fulton, Cobb, Cherokee) take fall break in late September, while districts more central and east (APS, DeKalb, Gwinnett) take it in mid-October.

This isn't unusual. Fall break scheduling reflects several factors including semester day counts, teacher planning cycles, and coordination with Indigenous Peoples' Day, which falls on Monday October 12, 2026. Districts that align fall break with that federal observance end up in the October window. Districts that build fall break around a mid-semester teacher planning cycle land earlier.

For families with kids in different districts (blended families, moves mid-year, or families choosing charter or private schools alongside public), this means you may have kids out on two completely different weeks.

Planning Around Fall Break: What Working Parents Should Know

If you're a working parent, fall break usually falls in one of the busiest professional weeks of the year. End of Q3 deadlines, project handoffs, planning for the last stretch before Thanksgiving. Taking a full week off isn't always realistic.

A few practical tips based on what we hear from JPC families every year:

  • Check your district's calendar as soon as it's released. Districts publish the following year's calendar as early as the spring before. Bookmark it, put the dates in your work calendar immediately, and flag them for your team.

  • Book camp early. Fall break camps fill up quickly, especially the ones with buses across the metro. Registration for popular programs often opens by summer, and by early September the best options are usually gone.

  • Look at the surrounding weeks too. Some districts add teacher workdays or professional learning days on the Monday or Friday just outside the official break week. These extra days can catch parents off guard. Check the full calendar, not just the fall break header.

  • Cross-check if you have kids in multiple districts. If one child is in APS and another is in Cobb, you may be covering two separate weeks. That's a real logistical planning problem worth thinking through in advance.

What to Do With the Kids That Week

Fall break in Atlanta is beautiful. The heat has broken, the leaves are starting to turn, and Georgia autumn is arguably the best time of year to be outdoors. But keeping kids entertained for a full week without turning it into a screen marathon requires a plan.

For families in the September 21-25 window (Fulton, Cobb, Cherokee), fall camp is often the easiest solution. Josh Powell Camp runs fall break camps across late September and October each year, timed to align with local district calendars. Full outdoor days, all the classic camp activities (archery, canoeing, ropes course, fort building, swimming), and buses from three pickup locations across Atlanta.

For families in the October 12-16 window (APS, DeKalb, Gwinnett), the same options apply. Cooler weather, changing leaves, and campfires actually possible again. Fall break is often the favourite week of the JPC calendar.
