IN THE BEGINNING

After earning degrees from Georgia Tech and Emory Law School and a brief tour with an Atlanta law firm, Josh Powell “chunked it all” in 1972, purchased this parcel of wooded land, and began carving out what is now Josh Powell Summer Day Camp.

“I purchased an old bulldozer and cleared the land," says Josh, "bought an old sawmill in South Georgia, brought it home and sawed my lumber to build the camp buildings. Then I rested for a day and began sawing lumber and building the camp residence."

When all of this was behind him, he felt somewhat justified in calling it “Josh Powell Summer Day Camp”.

“My goal was to create a program wherein young girls and boys could run and play through the day," continues Josh, "not having to worry about getting dirty and at the end of the day, go home tired.  My concern was not how much they would learn but how much fun they would have during the day.  That is pretty much what evolved”.

For over three and a half decades, the program has succeeded.

ABOUT US

Josh and his wife Karen are the camp directors.  They are responsible for hiring, firing, recruiting, confirming, cleaning, mowing, maintaining and all of the chores that pertain to operating a summer camp.  Karen is particularly adept at administering tender love and care when “stomach aches” suddenly occur and replacing lunches that never left the kitchen counter at home…or “got lost” as well as tending to the flowers and attempting to decorate the girls cabins in a manner they approve.  Josh handles most of the rest of the matters which arise daily….too numerous to mention.

"Should you call the camp office, you will talk with one of us," says Josh.  "If we are unavailable, leave a message and we shall contact you as soon as we can.  No buttons to push…no choices to make.  We are here for you."
